President's Message
Brant B. Richard, P.E.
ASCE Baton Rouge Branch President

As I begin my term as ASCE President of the Baton Rouge Branch, I want to thank the Board for nominating me to this very important position and each member for their vote of confidence. I would like to personally thank our past president Tommy Roberts for the guidance and direction of this past year. I hope I can continue to promote the society and be a resource for all civil engineers within the community.

I really feel it is an exciting time to be a civil engineer. With the unfortunate devastation of the Gulf Region, it has definitely created opportunities for civil engineers to assist in the rebuilding efforts. For many years to come, we will continue to see the design of infrastructure related projects in this region. This would include roadway, water, sewer, wastewater, site development, and other utility projects in the private and public sectors. This allows us as professionals to grow our careers, thus opening doors and public awareness of the importance of our profession.

I also look at many challenges faced throughout our society. In a time of rebuilding, reputation and credibility are important factors that must prevail. This gives us as a society to be at the table with decision makers for the future growth and development of this region.

My intent for this upcoming term is to be your voice and representative. I am open to any suggestions or comments in which you feel would make our Society a better one for you. My goal is to promote this Society and our profession to the utmost level of integrity so we can have more young people wanting to be civil engineers as this is our future as well as having a strong voice within the Baton Rouge community.

I am also excited with some changes throughout our Baton Rouge Branch. We now have a complete electronic web base with all of our communications. Here are some of the items we are currently working on:

  • A complete and updated website address for our Baton Rouge Branch coming in November 2006
  • Improvements of our website to handle employment opportunities
  • A monthly luncheon sponsorship program for consultants
  • More activities during the year to promote participation and exposure to our Society

In closing, I am very excited about serving as your ASCE Baton Rouge Branch President for the next year and look forward to the challenges as well as being your representative.
